REV. ROBERT EDSON, Emmanuel Church

The Reverend Robert Bruce EdsonThe Reverend Robert Bruce Edson was born at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, and was raised in Washington, D.C. He was graduated in 1963 with a B.A. from Tusculum College, Greeneville, Tennessee, and an M. Div. in 1966 from the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, MA. He was ordained to the diaconate in 1966 and to the priesthood in 1967 in the Washington National Cathedral. Fr. Robert served as Assistant in Saint John's Church, Chevy Chase, Maryland, 1966 – 1970; Rector of Saint John's Church in Cornwall, New York, 1970-1976; Rector of Trinity Church in Washington, D.C., 1976-1981; and Rector of Saint John's Church in Hingham, MA, 1981- 2007. Since 2008, Fr. Robert has served as Interim Priest in Saint John’s Church in Franklin, MA.

His wife, the late Reverend Diane M. Edson, was a priest and founding director of Wellspring Multi-Service Center in Hull, MA. She was Rector of St. Andrew's Church in Hanover, MA, for five years. Their son, David, is an actor and musician in New York City and their daughter Sarah is an educational technologist at Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Ct.

Fr. Robert served as Dean of the South Shore Clergy and was for 11 years Director of the Recently Ordained Clergy of the Diocese. He presently serves as a Chaplain to Retired Clergy and Surviving Spouses, the Board of the Society of the Relief of Aged or Disabled Episcopal Clergy and the Society for the Relief of Widows and Orphans of Episcopal Clergy. He is a trustee of the Margaret Coffin Prayer Book Society. He also serves as a consultant to parishes in transition as well as mentor to clergy who are beginning new ministries. In the local community, he is on the Board of Wellspring Multi-Service Center in Hull, MA, and the Board of Blue Hills Healthy Families in Weymouth, MA.

Fr. Robert has traveled to England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, Italy, Israel, Turkey and Cuba. His hobbies include walking, swimming, sailing, and reading history and biography.
